/lang/ - language learning general
FIRST!!!!!!! FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>>>>>> /lang/ on /lang/
We're reaching /lang/ levels previously unheard of
>>7
how do I learn a language?
>>10
duolingo. 15 minutes a day.
>>11
>15 mins
ain't that a bit overkill?
>>12
you'd think, but it's actually backed by science
>>13
can't be arsed to spend that much time on a hobby, my man
>>10
Also, remember that you have to learn language X before you learn your TL
I am lappol btw, I don’t know if it matters.
>>16
impersonation!
>>15
pointless if it isn't useful. best go by amount of speakers, this translates to economic relevance, which is really relevant in this day and age.
Big up this
Well, shall we get started?
>Simple
I read the book.
I give him his lunch.
I send letters to them
>Easy
I run quickly to the train station.
Every other week I try to go to a new restaurant.
You can buy this book anywhere you can find a bookstore.
>Medium
I will go on vacation out of the country next month.
I used to watch football games with a big group of people
I wish that I could have gone to that concert.
>Hard
Although it was cheap, I couldn't afford a new TV.
The fisherman, who thought that he followed the map correctly, ended up at the wrong lake.
Because of the storm, we had to cancel our event, even though the report said it would be hot and sunny.
>>22
No one does these anymore.
>>22
Those take me back, damn
anki done and dusted for today. have YOU done due diligence?
Lads, there is only one question that matters and I believe you will gladly help me:
Russian or Arabic?
>>27
Persian.
>>26
I haven't gooned since the start of August
I have, however, made a commitment to thinking about considering restarting my anki sessions and actually learning grammar again... maybe.
>>27
Turkish
>>27
Arabic, but Moroccan
>>29
TL? Put Anki on your phone of you haven't, it makes it a lot harder to forget about sets
i made this thread out of habit but then i realized this board is called lang, so how is this supposed to go? is every topic to be posted in an individual thread?
personally i think a general hangout thread would be nice (le tradition), but maybe /lang/ is a rarted name on a board called /lang/

>>29
kjør på
>>31
btw is there a good app for iOS? i use the browser version because they decided their only paid product should be the iOS app (i guess because iphone users are meant to be rich?) which they sell for

30€

lol, lmao even
>>33
>30€
the fuck?
>>32
just wing it for now, I think
I think someone could ask about a specific language in a thread and then the entire thread would be on‐topic, etc, but that will come about organically with time and more people (including non‐/lang/ers) I reckon
>>35
makes cents
hey this way we could sticky a resource bread one day maybe sorta kinda maybe
>>34
yep. i think i remember to have read that the official explanation was actually that they decided this would be the best way to make some money to support their costs (which is partly legitimate as they do host user uploaded content for free, so it takes up bandwidth, space, and might become a liability at some point) by baiting maybe a dozen ios users into making this one‐off purchase because they're pissed off by the mobile website. not sure how it's holding up for them, but i guess i can understand it, just super annoying for me, as i will NOT pay 30€ for a flashcard app.
>>32
General hangout would be good and fun, just have to think of a clever name for it.
>is every topic to be posted in an individual thread?
Probably not, but I'm thinking the individual language generals could serve as both for natives talking in it, and then learners use it to ask questions. If it gets too clogged, then they'll probably split? Dunno past that.
>>33
>iToddlers stay losing
Memrise is the closest thing I can think of, but it's been a long while since I've used it‐ hopefully they haven't destroyed it with ads
>>31
>TL?
Japanese
I prefer it on my PC because the plugins make life easier, I just fell out of the habit when I stopped doing it for a few weeks to study for an exam.
Little did I know, but much did I expect, that I spent 12 days not doing my anki AND not studying for my exam. Worst of both worlds
>>38
Isn't Anki pretty much just a Japanese learning tool specifically anyway?
>>36
Maybe you can find a pirated one. But idk how possible app piracy is on Apple devices.
>>39
no, it just lets you create flashcards and employs a spaced repetition system. you can use it for any topic in need of memorization
>>40
actually, in the EU sideloading is possible. not sure though if the installation file can be found somewhere. i’ll look it up tomorrow. time to shleeo
>>22
So is anyone gonna do it or not?
>>22

>>44
are you happy now...
>>22

I made friends with a Japanese guy and I now have a 5 month deadline to learn Japanese well enough to have a conversation with him in it because he said that would be really fun and I agreed.
Time to goon some more anki, that will surely be my winning ticket.
Oh, and I am not Norwegian, I just live close to the border so I cannot help you >>45 with corrections, sorry.
>>51
Learn the stuff that'll be most relevant and you'll be absolutely golden ‐ try texting with him in Japanese to make all the errors before the big dat‐‐ day
>>22
>I read the book.
Is this present or past tense
>>55
Guessing present since the other two are.
>give
>send
>>22

>>70
Mood, I've been delaying making some more Anki sets cause I'm like "ah, I'll get to it later". I've been at least surrounding myself in my TL so I don't feel as guilty LOL
>>69
I don't even remember about this place.
Also, checked.

This, time is irrelevant, just say how something happened and that should be good enough
>>85
What happens when I want a tense AND an aspect?
>>86

>>85
"it happened regulary"
>>22
this will go terrible... I haven't even read in French since ages

Not even touching the hard part.
>>74
How many TLs are you working with?
>>98
Two: Japanese and Portuguese. I am in the input spamming phase but I am just too lazy to input so I am progressing at a snail's pace

I keep seeing content aimed towards beginner learners of Mandarin and it makes me want to dabble.
>>99
I picked up Chinese pretty recently and conceptually it's pretty easy ngl. I also have an IRL loosely guiding me and some textbooks, but I've had a lot of fun even watching SpongeBob since it's so different. There's also this one band (of many) I like called Namewee, he's pretty funny.
https://youtu.be/VmdHdDPt1NM
I WILL do the /lang/ challenge.
>>102
what's stopping you?
>>103
Nothing.

(Avlyse fungerer bedre her)

>>106
>(ham er formelt)
aldrig hört talas om
>>104
big = wielki doesn't seem right, wielki means huge if you ask me
i think it would be better say prognozowano ciepłą pogodę
that's all, seems really good otherwise
>>22
I upped my TL since the last time I think

>>104
"próbuję nowej restauracji" sounds like you're eating the restaurant itself, I'd use "próbuję" with accusative or maybe "sprawdzam nową restaurację"

"za granicę" separately, in this sentence you're not declining the noun "zagranica"

oglądałem kogo, co - mecze

szkoda, że nie mogłem (...) - it already occurred

nie stać mnie było - past tense of the defective verb

I'd switch the order in here (pomyślawszy, że(...), rybak (...)), it's not incorrect but more natural (more in line with the original sentence?)

I'd say "w prognozie napisano", if it was a text report, "na prognozie" sounds like it's a whole website dedicated to weather forecast, an app or something
