About

Island Zero is a textboard created in April 2021, influenced by various image and textboards, including 4chan, channel4, 2ch, and Ylilauta.
Originally, the idea behind anonymous bulletin board systems was pioneered in Japan. Imageboards have gained much notoriety and popularity around the world over the years, however textboards have mostly been contained within the country. The goal of Island Zero is to create a thriving community of users, have fun, and promote thoughtful and provoking discussions.

Privacy Policy

Island Zero does not normally collect any information from the user, and once a thread has been pruned or deleted, all posts and IP addresses within are deleted in the database, and links to said thread will result in a 404 (not found) error code. However, if a user is banned for violating the rules, their offending post and IP address may be stored temporarily, in order to cooperate with the proper authorities, or until the ban has been lifted. Sites such as Island Zero are founded upon the posts made by their users, and thus the user is responsible for the information that they include in their posts.

 EU citizens and GDPR

While Island Zero is based in the United States of America, and follows US law as dictated by both the geographical server location and top level domain (.org), we still serve EU users and adhere to EU legislation, and apply these heightened pro-consumer practices to every visitor. By participating (posting), you contribute your IP address, which is hashed using HMAC-SHA, and if you do not, the only data stored is in your browser (see next paragraph below).

The data you consent to being stored when using this website is entirely client-side and pertains to user preferences.
Since this data is strictly necessary in order to uphold site functionality for a visiting user, you cannot opt out of the website storing said data. If you do not consent to this storage, you may not use Island Zero.

What is stored?

 1. User preferences as defined in Settings
 2. The website's visual theme (stylesheet) as chosen by the user.
 3. Posts hidden by the user.
 4. The last used on-screen position of the Quick Reply window.
You may clear this data at any time via your browser's history clearing feature, or manually via the browser's storage tab.
Clearing this data will reset your settings to default.

You may also export your settings at any time via the Settings window, in order to restore them later, or move them to another browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a thread?
Click the button that says [Create a Thread] and fill out the form. Refer to the guide before making your first thread.

How do I post a reply?
Click the button at the bottom that says [Post a reply] and fill out the form. Refer to the guide if you're unsure of what certain post form fields are for.
Note: If keyboard shortcuts are enabled in the Settings, you may press Q on your keyboard to access the Quick Reply window. Refer to the Settings for more information.

How do I post anonymously?
You do that by default. Simply do not fill out the name field when making a thread or posting a reply. Your post will then be submitted using the default anonymous name of whichever board you posted on. Different boards use different default names.

How do I register a username?
You can't. This is a community focused on anonymous contribution, where focus is put on the content posted, and not on the person posting it. If you need to temporarily establish an identity, consider using a tripcode. Refrain from using signatures or other recurring words or catchphrases used to self-identify yourself.

How do I quote someone?
To quote text, type a single pointer, ">", followed by the quoted message. This is often referred to as greentext, due to quotes most often appearing with a green color on various boards on the internet. For example, typing ">this is a quote" will result in >this is a quote. If you open the Quick Reply window while text is highlighted on the page, that text will be inserted into the QR window prefixed with this quotation pointer.

To quote specific posts, including the OP (original poster, i.e. thread maker), type out the post's unique number prefixed by two pointers, ">>".
For example, typing ">>990" will become a quote (>>990) that references post #990. This process is automated if you click on a given post's post number, as doing so fills out the Quick Reply window with the correct quotation.

Cross-linking to other boards can be achieved by typing out the board handle prefixed by three pointers, ">>>", with or without a post number.
For example, typing out ">>>/v/990" will become a quote (>>>/v/990) that references post #990 on /v/, the videogame board, while simply typing >>>/v/ will become a link (>>>/v/) to /v/.

How do I obscure text that contains spoilers?
On certain boards, it's imperative to spoilerize text containing plot spoilers. In order to do so, you place spoiler tags around the text you want to hide until interacted with.
For example, typing "
this is a spoiler
" will result in this is a spoiler.
Refer to the board-specific rules if you're unsure of which boards spoiler tags are to be used on.
Note: If keyboard shortcuts are enabled in the Settings, you may press Ctrl+S to insert these spoiler tags automatically around highlighted text in the textarea of the QR window.

How do I upload a file or image?
You cannot. This a textboard, not an imageboard. Refrain from hotlinking to images. If you must share an image, upload it to a veritable host, such as Imgur, and share the link. Anything off-topic and/or in violation of the rules will result in a permanent ban. We need to emphasize, however, that this is not a place for images. We greatly discourage this type of image sharing, even though we may allow it on certain occasions. If you feel like posting images often enough that this is a problem, you might feel at home over at 4chan.
Files that comply with our policies on file sharing may be linked to using any host that isn't malicious.

How do I use a tripcode?
Refer to the guide on how to use tripcodes.

How do I report a post?
If you believe a post violates any of our rules, then click on the post menu button ("▶") to the right of the post metadata (left if on mobile, "⋮"), and select the menu option that says Report Post, and follow the instructions. Reporting a thread follows the same process, but you select the OP/opening post of a thread instead, and subsequently the Report Thread option.
After this, your report can be seen by staff, and they will take appropriate action.

How do I delete a post?
You can delete your own post by clicking on the post menu and selecting the Delete Post option. You cannot delete posts made by other users.

How do I delete a thread?
Threads cannot be deleted, so please make sure you are content with its contents before submitting. This is in place to discourage off-topic threads and spam.

How do I hide a post?
If you wish to not see a post, click the post menu and select the Hide Post option. This hides the post contents. If enabled in Settings, the post may be entirely hidden, including metadata. If you have this setting enabled, and wish to unhide the post, disable the setting in order to access the menu to unhide the post.
Note: If keyboard shortcuts are enabled in the Settings, you may press and hold down Shift on your keyboard while clicking on a post to hide/unhide it. Refer to the Settings for more information.

How do I access Settings?
Click on Settings in the sidebar, or the button with a cogwheel icon when the sidebar is collapsed/hidden. This will open a modal window with all user-customizable settings. On mobile, click the Settings option in the topmost navigation bar.

How do I change themes?
Use the theme selector in the sidebar; expand the sidebar if collapsed by clicking on the button with a right-pointing chevron (above the cogwheel button). The currently active theme will be displayed. If on mobile, you can access the default dark theme in Settings, if you wish to toggle between light and dark themes. The mobile interface currently does not allow for the full range of themes available on desktop.

How do I save my settings?
Your settings are automatically saved in your browser. If you use private/incognito sessions, your settings will not be retained upon closing the browser. If you clear browser history/data for this domain (islandzero.org), your settings will not be retained. You may keep your settings by exporting them and keeping them somewhere else while clearing browser data, and then you may import them afterwards.
Note: Hidden posts, as well as the last used on-screen position of the Quick Reply window, are also cleared, but not retained in the Settings exportation. Any posts you have hidden will be unhidden, if not deleted since, upon clearing browser data/history, and the QR window will be returned to its default position.

How do I export my settings or sync them with other browsers?
You can use the Export/Import feature to export and import settings between browsers and machines. It's a simple string that is copied and pasted.
Open the Settings window and click the button that says Export Settings, and copy the string of text that's presented to you.
To import, open the Settings and click the button that says Import Settings, and paste the string of text you copied from the export window.
Note: The mobile interface currently does not allow for the import or export of settings.

Can I post in languages other than English?
Yes, but only on /lang/, our language-oriented board.

What does a ban mean?
A ban is a restriction on posting and participating in the Island Zero community. Bans are usually temporary, of variying durations, and the result of rule violations.

How do I know if I'm banned?
You may check your ban status by looking at this page.

Can I appeal my ban?
If you believe you've been unfairly banned, or banned by mistake, you may appeal your ban via the form on this page.

How can I tell a moderator from a regular user?
Generally you cannot, as staff members are meant to participate just as anonymously as everyone else. However, if a moderator needs to, he/she may post using a capcode.

What is a capcode?
A capcode is a form of "staff-only tripcode", so to speak, that appears after the name of a posting staff member, serving to assert said staff member's role.
A moderator capcode is purple with an icon next to it with a tooltip saying "This user is an Island Zero Moderator" upon hovering over it with the mouse cursor: ## Mod .
Similarily, the site's administrator may post using the administrator capcode: ## Admin .

When viewing a thread in which staff members have posted, capcodes may be clicked in order to highlight (or remove the highlight of) all posts made by staff members of the same role (i.e. all capcodes of the same type). For example, upon hovering over a moderator capcode with the mouse cursor, there will be a tooltip saying "Highlight posts by Moderators". Clicking will toggle highlighting of all posts with a moderator capcode.

How do I join the staff?
Currently we do not accept staff applications, nor do we have a system to facilitate that process. This may change in the future.
Questions or concerns regarding moderation, or other aspects of this website, may be taken to /meta/ - Site Feedback.

How do I contact the staff?
